    Short answer

A NAICS code is the number the North American Industry Classification System gives an industry. It is the standard US federal statistical agencies use to classify business establishments, and it replaced the older SIC system in 1997. Codes run from 2 digits (a sector) to 6 digits (a national industry); the 2022 edition has 2,125 codes. To find a code, search by what a business makes or sells and pick the most specific title that fits. A business can have more than one NAICS code. This free lookup searches the official US Census Bureau list.

    What is a NAICS code?

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by US federal statistical agencies to classify business establishments. It was adopted in 1997 to replace the older Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system, and was developed jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

    How do the digits work?

Each extra digit is more specific: a 2-digit sector, a 3-digit subsector, a 4-digit industry group, a 5-digit NAICS industry and a 6-digit national industry. Three sectors use a range instead of a single number: Manufacturing (31-33), Retail Trade (44-45) and Transportation and Warehousing (48-49).

How do I find a company's NAICS code?

Search by what the company makes or sells, then pick the most specific code whose title fits. The SBA notes that a business generally has one primary NAICS code, but can have several if it sells several products or services. This lookup shows official industry codes; it does not show which code a specific company has chosen.

    What about SIC codes?

SIC is the older classification that NAICS replaced in 1997. Some databases and forms still use SIC codes. There is no exact one-to-one match between SIC and NAICS codes, so this page does not convert between them. The official SIC list is published by the US Department of Labor (OSHA).

How do sales teams use NAICS codes?

Sales and marketing teams use industry codes to write down which industries they target, for example in an Ideal Customer Profile or a target account list. A code tells you the industry, not whether a particular company needs what you sell. That is the part Leads10 helps with: it reads your website, builds your Ideal Customer Profile and returns real matching companies, each with its industry, a fit score from 70 to 100 and a written match reason.
